System Shock 2? Make sure you pick up the texture upgrade (http://shtup.home.att.net/) and the hi-poly model pack (http://perso.wanadoo.fr/etienne.aubert/sshock/sshock_rebirth.htm).
Then prepare yourself; SS2 is the scariest game I've played, and I've gone through a lot of survival horror and similar FPS games.

Interesting...thanks for the links; I'll be sure to keep this page in mind in case I actually get it working. I even went so far as to try the download off home of the underdogs, but couldn't get the sound to work. Fate has conspired to make me never play that game.

I wouldn't get your hopes up about finding a copy of the game; its extremely difficult to find unless you want to pay ungoldy amounts off amazon, and I've never found a rip that actually worked properly. I actually found a copy a while ago but it was used and had a scratch that I didn't see, so it won't install past 34%.

Oh hell yes. My SS2 cd is probably my most valued gaming posession ever. I once looked for a second CD to make coop games easier to organise. I figured that since the game was ancient by this point, it should be easy to find a copy on budget or second hand. How wrong was I Thus I value that little piece of plastic even more now ;D Can't wait to see what they do with Bioshock when it's finished and released. The creatures in that sound even stranger and more twisted than the Many. I think I'll probably sell my own body parts on the balck market if necessary to get a suitable PC for Bioshock. It's safe to say I love my SS2 to an almost unhealthy degree May I add to the SS2 downloads list Arboretum, found here: www.sshock2.com/shocked/Missions.aspIt's short, but possibly even more tense than the official levels. It's also a bit ugly to install, but oh so worth the hassle for a dedicated Shock junkie. Last words - as you can see, don't get Gibber started on SS2. I can ramble on about it for hours. Mmmmm, so many great moments that I don't want to spoil for the Shock virgins out there. I'm just going to daydream for awhile that KF can end up even half as good.....

Just bit torrent / IRC pirate it if you can't find it I figure that must classify as "acceptable" for ancient titles

THANK YOU for that Arboretum link, I never knew about it and now I have more SS to play. Honestly, I didn't know about SS2 until about 2 years ago, and I didn't play it until a year ago when I had the luck to find it on a torrent tracker that specialized in classic PC games (sorry, forgot the name!) and burnt it to a CD. It was probably better that way; I played through the whole game with both texture and model packs, 6x temporal AA 8xAF and a 7.1 speaker system, which probably made the atmosphere better than the original. Now it is one of my favorite games. If you REALLY can't find it, maybe I can send you a CD if you pay the S&H.

Well, piracy is legal so long as you own a copy of the game in the first place, right? I mean, if I could find another one(that didn't cost more now than it did when it first came out)then I'd buy it. I found a site where they had a bunch of torrents of varying sizes, so I guess I'll by systematically(lol)checking those out. Thanks a bunch for the idea, Alex; I did a search for "system shock 2 bit torrent" which gave me the site mentioned above. The one thing I don't get? I have never once seen a top fifty or even a top ten PC games of all time list that didn't have system shock 2 on it, yet for some reason irrational never made system shock 3. Apparently they've been bought out by take 2, so, while things are looking up for the system shock series, it doesn't look like freedom force three will be coming out anytime soon .

The reason there's no SS3, and why it hasn't been released on budget, is that there are about three different publishers who all have a claim to the intellectual property. They managed to agree enough to have SS2 made, but since then things have gone pear-shaped in a big way However there is Bioshock, Irrational's new concept that is very much inspired by SS2, but set in an abandoned WW2 bunker previously used for dubious genetic experiments. We may not see Shodan again for awhile, which is a real shame, but the atmosphere and style of SS2 are being continued in Bioshock. Hopefully Bioshock will be a huge sucess, and the smell of money will help the lawyer types in all the various companies put aside their old differences enough to let Irrational produce a SS3 ;D
