i do like akira but i dont normally sit and watch a film for 2 hours unless i am in cinema so i cant see my self watching it in the near future.

If you do watch Akira again do so subbed. The reissue Geneon/Pioneer "special editions" butchered the english dub. I was lucky enough to have the original dub from Orion in vhs. Now it just sounds like Nickelodian voiceover rejects doing the dub, bad bad bad.

I just make it a point to never watch anything dubbed... I majored in the language, and let me tell you that you lose a lot more than you think with a dub... heck, I won't watch any film dubbed... unless that's the point, like the Dynamen or something... "I... suddenly... have the urge to... GO UNDERGROUND!"

Dubbed? You mean with subtitles or just not in the original language?
If I can't understand it, I'll miss the story and I definately want to know what's going on in a movie.

Watch it with your prefered language's subtitles. Unless you actually speak Japanese.

Subtitles are usually best for preserving the meaning in the conversation, and the voices are made to match the character better. They actually change a lot of dialog so that the voices match the mouth movements, which does result in a lot of oddities.

Sometimes the dubbing job can be pretty good, though. Some notables are full metal alchemist and cowboy(I always try to type coyboy or coybow...). I actually prefer both of those dubbed than I do subtitled(or trying to piece together what it means from the limited amount of japanese I know, which usually requires a lot of rewinding and frustration).
I mean, vicious' voice is, IMO, somewhere in the neighborhood of a kajillion(rounded up) times better in English than Japanese.
But I agree, the vast majority of dubbing jobs end up with a big mess.

My friend was always hyped about the Cowboy Bebop dub... I don't know, maybe I've just grown biased.

The problem with subtitles is, I simply hate reading them and watching the movie at the same time. I'll have to watch it twice, one time to read the subtitles and another time to recognize what's going on. Japanese is a nice language though, which expresses feelings very well in my opinion. That's why I enjoy slow japanese songs.

It is a very interesting language... you can't really seperate it and the culture though... there's so much meaning in everything... it can be a pain to talk to people at first though, as the conversation path is more geared to dancing around and hinting at what you want rather then just saying it.

does anybody know how many macross films/series there are? i know of macross plus, macross zero, macross 7 and macross 2 lovers again but is there any more?

That's why I enjoy slow japanese songs. Japanese songs are so annoying... They give me headaches  Maybe slow songs can be alright... But the fast ones with squeeky voice singers are just... Gaah... |
