Daj suggested i try running KF in opengl cause of the d3 errors i've been getting, but how?
i've tried to force throu the ut2004.ini in the main KFmod folder but each time i start KF it defaults the rendering back to d3d. anybody have an idea about why it's defaulting to d3d or how i can get opengl up and running for KF.
and before you ask yes i can force vanilla ut2k4 to use gl through the ini in the main \system folder.

try adding -opengl to the shortcut command line paramters, after the quotes.
worked for mne.
Be aware, some visual features will be buggy or may not work at all in OPenGL
namely : Motion Blurs, and some Shaders (Bullpup and Crossbow scopes, Water effects in Single Player etc.)

thanks Alex will try amending my short cut. if it will an end to the crashes i'll put up with a few bugged visuals.
edit: adding it to the shortcut worked like a charm, plus opengl gave me a 10fps boost too boot.

Those 10fps are probably from not having to render the stuff OpenGL doesn't support. Player shadows don't work either. You can change the default renderer without adding a startup switch by editing KFMod.ini, if you want high framerates i can especially recommend engine.nullrenderer.
