Melee attacks are not really necessary. You´ve always got your knife to fall back to and you don´t really want to go into melee against most enemies anyway.

Oh I agree and don't see it used as an actual attack. But say your are being mobbed and there is a way out but one enemy is in your way, give him a melee hit with the gun he/she is stunned for just enough time so you can leg it.

Most of the time that won't happen as you will probably just die but every now and then it would be great for the skilled players.
