You dont need to forward any ports to play on a server, only to host, only when behind a router.

I have had this problem too, and I don't know about all that forwarding port 7777 stuff, but these are a few things I did to try and get Killing Floor working online.
1) First off I re-installed Killing Floor, and low and behold I joined the first server I double-clicked on. I don't know if it was directally related, but I pretty sure It had an effect.
2) One thing I've noticed is that I still get the screen with the hand and a long period of inactivity (and then nothingness) when I try and join servers that don't show me any information at the bottom of the screen, and also when I'm on cirtin internet connections (i.e. my friend's Apple Network). This may be solved by simply waiting a few minutes before trying to connect to a server, but I'm usually too impaitent and just move on to the next one.
Coincidentally, I've had absolutely no touble with this trying to set up and play lan games, nor have I ever gotten an error messege, so this advice may not even work for any of you, but I really really hope it does. 'Cause if there's anything more frusturating than not being able to play Killing Floor online, it's trying to figure out why you can't play Killing Floor online.

I believe it has to do with server/client version differences. Before reading the installation instructions I was on v2.0 and I could only join one of the servers, and I had problems similar to the ones mentioned here trying to join other servers. After patching, I couldn't join that particular server, but I could join the other servers. The server I could no longer join after patching called itself a v2.0 server, as well.
Playing on a LAN wouldn't have this problem, likely because all the clients and the server were set up by the same person or using the same directions/files.

I'm pondering if it might/probably is the .ucl(Correct?) files that appear for maps in your KF/System folder...Like...it must be something

on a side note one server when i join it says downloaing package KF-Bioticslab failed:server refuses to send.
this map comes with the mod why would i download it?
i could just be having bad luck because theres only 4 other servers at the time im posting this. 2 are passworded and 2 dont have a ping which makes me think they arent working properly. im stuck with this one. my game hasnt crashed when i left or right clicked though so thats good.

It could be either
a) you don't have 2.1, or b) the server does not have 2.1.

Or that person decided to edit KF-BioticsLab and save it over the original. But usually you get "Version Mismatch"

Unfortunatly, I play on private servers. So I can't help you out on that. What I usually do if I want to play is, find somebody who can host, and then gather a few friends around on MSN and discuss if they want to play.

I mostly play on mcclaws or KNO's in the old days there was the "SHIT! zombies" server, great ping and nearly 100% uptime but they never bothered to go 2.0 sadly

You could try my server, usually when there is a bunch of people online, some of them are on my server, like today when i started it up after coming home from the holidays. After about 15 min i had a full house. Look for "The FragGrounds"
