Yes, the Wii can play Gamecube games. But you need a Gamecube controller to do so I believe. I don't know if the classic controller works or not.

But when you've got a GC-Controller, you don't need a Classic-Controller anymore for the virtual console games, normally.

From what I have been hearing, you only need a Classic Controller...At least, I am sure that is what Nintendo announced before the Wii was out, whether that has changed...I do not know.
