I just got this game installed properly, following the guide on the site. Took me a bit, but I got it going. Now I'm having trouble connecting to servers.
I connect to one, but the screen goes to a screen (it has the main menu background image) and then goes black. It looks like it tries to connect, but then the screen went completely black. It does nothing, but when I hit Esc, it gives me a little menu, with like "Exit UT2004" and such.
Hoping for some help, because this game looks like a blast. ;D

One of the most vexxing problems in the mod.
As I understand it, when that happens it means there's a problem connecting, like if they're using a map you don't have or something, its just the game doesn't tell you what's going on. Try downloading the 2.1 patch, and get the community map pack.
Seriously though, does anyone know if this is going to be fixed in Alex's patch? Considering the number of posts about this specific problem, I think we can classify it as an epidemic.

Black screen onjoin = downloading custom content/different version KF/misconfigured server/very high latency/connection failed on join/full server.
Only 2 of those reasons means the server is actually accepting connections (guess). There's a lot of ppl that have no business running a server. The Game part is simple point+click but a lot of ppl are just clueless about firewalls, routers, or patching the game; and even through that expect it to automagically work and ppl to join. Best thing to do is play on servers known to have ppl on them. Just remember the 6 person limit when trying to join an active server.

The servers I have tried to join haven't been full, and had 3 players max. The main ones I have tried are Killing Floor 2.0 servers, which I'm guessing are ran by the people who made the mod... Also, the maps the server is hosting are ones that I DO have. I've tried countless times, and still nothing =\ Really hoping to be able to play this game online... I don't care for it so much single-player, but multi-player looks to be a blast. |

AFAIK the very few dev/contrib still active in this community (about as many since the 2.0 release  )do not run servers. Bind a key to showhud (set input "keyhere-noquotes" showhud). If you still have a black/menumap screen about 10sec after trying to connect just hit whatever button you've bound this to. It should show what's happening (receiving files, etc..) if there is anything happening. Just remember it's a toggle (showhud) so if something isn't showing up afterwards (menu, hud, weaps) just hit it again. |

In my experience it tends to be something to do with the mutators that people are using. This problem might only apply to me 'cause there can be 2 or 3 people on the server I'm trying to join but I can still play as long as I go for servers with few or, if possible, no mutators.

All servers for me i get the regular screen with hand and all that, but if i click while it is loading it goes to black screen.

Type 'showhud' in console and it will tell you what's going on.

This is because there is a problem connecting to the server or the users router like mine. My router is confusing but because of the way it is no one is able to connect and will get that black screen.

could this be related to the 2.11 unofficial patch that was released? I know that wasn't included into the install instructions (and i've been having same issues and I didn't download the 2.11) so that could be creating the connection issues? (and the map download issue?) EDIT: i dl'ed the unofficial 2.11 and it fixed my issue with the black screen (and my former connection issues). There is no "Connecting" menu so as soon as you just press esc all is fine, The black screen is just what you get if you fail to connect. |

Guys, the 'Black Screen Bug' has now been fixed by PiX, follow the above link and download the updated version of KF-Menu. I have thoroughly tested this on various servers and the connect screen is now shown.

I've got it but i cant say it seems to make any noticable difference. i guess its just the white text you are talking of when connecting to a server?
