Just a list of everything I reccomend, lots of people do this but I am dissapointed by most of their lists being commercial products, and the list offers very few things, and mostly its only Windows products. I aimed to make my own, this list offers a wide variety of products, both commercial, and freeware, and mostly cross-platform, and I have been keeping this list updated for awhile.
*Feel free to add stuff to the thread, If others like it, and if I sorta approve, in anyway, I'll add it to the post.
**Any Mac users out there, who could reccomend software? Contact me, that would be a HUGE help. Thanks.
***Try and keep the list to freeware apps only, of course you can post commercial ones, but I did try my best to keep 80% of the list to freeware/open source products.
****Please add a compatibility list onto your post when you submit something to the list, like in the list, Windows Vista/XP & Linux Compatible, if its also Mac, then add Mac to the list to, thanks.
*****I'll give credits where its due, if you submit something, you will get a Thanks To: Message at the bottom of the post.
******Mods, are not games. Therefore they do not go under the games heading, maybe later I will add a Unreal Tournament Series Mod category...
*******I need better "Specs to be Pr0" list. Please contact me with your list improvement if you have any, thanks.
********Like this list? Want to post it on another site? Please do! Feel free to make changes to the list and add your own, however please do give some credit to me and the other contributors where it is due. Thanks.

General Use: Operating System[/u]
Linux Ubuntu - Ubuntu is aimed to be a simple Linux distro to learn, and comes with a variety of free programs(Linux is free btw), so for general software use(Ie: Email, Internet Browsing, music, cd burning) Linux is great, as there is a lot of free high quality programs, that generally, do more than the Windows commercial counterparts.
Note: If you are not sure about Linux, and have always used Windows, you may prefer Kubuntu
[link=http://www.microsoft.com
/windows/products/windowsxp/default.mspx]Windows XP SP2[/link] - Offers a wide selection of programs. Best compatibility. Unfortunatly a lot of the good software is either commercial or shareware, but I will post my list of freeware.
Windows Vista - Home Basic/Premium - Ugh, try and stay away from it for a little while. I use Vista, so don't say that I haven't truely tried it. Sure, it looks nice, but for general usage, it isin't as great as XP. My hard-earned copy of Nero 5 for example, has compatibility issues with Vista, and cannot be used. Sure, it WILL be good, and it WILL surpass XP, nobody can deny that, but for right now, XP is still better. Home Premium is probably the best for general use, you will get Media Center and such, I bought Business Edition because I'm a gamer at heart.
Mac OS X Leopard - For General use, you can't go wrong with a Mac.
Note: I don't use a Mac, and therefore will not be adding programs or program compatibility with Mac's. Sorry.
General Use: Software[/u]
Mozila Thunderbird / OpenOffice(Does OpenOffice have an email client? I only ever use Thunderbird) (Windows Vista/XP & Linux compatible)
Mozilla Firefox (Windows Vista/XP & Linux Compatible)

DAEMON Tools (This free program is a brilliant Virtual CD/DVD Drive, although widely used for games, can serve a good use for General Usage to, Windows Vista/XP Compatible)
NOTE:
The Lastest DAEMON Tools includes spyware, now you DO have the option to disable it in the installation, so don't go running around looking for other alternatives because DAEMON Tools is still, a great, free application. To deselect this great evil...
DAEMON Tools still wins its place in my taskbar. And it is allowed to touch and "mount" my beautiful ISO files.
Kdenlive (For KDE users, this is a great video editing tool, Linux Compatible)
Windows Movie Maker 2.1(Well...I usually try to ditch the Microsoft stuff as soon as I install Windows, but Windows Movie Maker 2.1 is perfect, great features, and good support, I haven't found a free video editing program like it. Windows Vista/XP Compatible)
Limewire (Look at it this way, I liked it so much, I bought the PRO version, Windows Vista/XP & Linux Compatible)
WiNE (WiNE is NOT an Emulator, great for those .exe files that you need to run in Linux, Linux compatible)
Alien (Convert those .rpm into .deb's, or various others, a must for Debian/Red Hat Package users, Linux Compatible)
AVG Anti-Virus Free (A free Anti-Virus program, features regular updates and schedule virus scans, I personally use Norton, but AVG Free is about as good as a free anti-virus can get, Windows Vista/XP & Linux Compatible)
AVG Anti-Spyware Free (Never used, I've always used Norton, but if its anything as good as the Anti-Virus free, then its reccomended. Windows Vista/XP Compatible)
Windows Firewall(Its a firewall, you can't get GOOD or BAD firewalls, they just work, and if they don't, they are spyware, therefore the default one is OK. Don't complain. Windows Vista/XP compatible)
uTorrent Really, any Torrent Client is great, but this one is better, Windows Vista/XP & Linux Compatible)
7-Zip (I changed my mind, this program is MUCH better than winRAR, You do NOT need winRAR to open .rar files, lots of other applications can do it, 7-Zip is a free, open source application that can open many files, including .rar(But only open, not compress, Windows Vista/XP & Linux Compatible)
vmware (Never gotten it to work, but apparently its a great Virtual Machine Program, Windows Vista/XP & Linux Compatible)
innotek VirtualBox (It's what I use, works great, I accidently downloaded the KDE version instead of the GNOME, so it doesn't work as good as it should, but still, great, Windows Vista/XP & Linux Compatible)
Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (Not everything that comes out of Microsoft is bad, this program is excellent, it used to cost you, but now its free, rejoice, and use it. Windows Vista/XP compatible)
RK Launcher (This is the best, free, dockbar application I have ever used, 5 out of 5, Windows Vista/XP Compatible)

Nero (Nero is THE DVD Burning/Editing/Recording program. With brilliant features, I could not live without this. Windows Vista/XP & Linux Compatible)

Moon Secure Antivirus (Open Source, GPL virus scanner, offers the same as Clamwin, except has a Resident Shield, however this does not support scan scheduling. I suggest you combine this with Clamwin)
KompoZer (Simply, brilliant, free, WYSIWYG capable, HTML/CSS editor. Windows Vista/XP & Linux Compatible)
HiJackThis (Note: This doesn't find viruses, this basically is another way to find rootkits and viruses you generally don't know about. As this is slightly complicated to use, here is how to use it.
RegCleaner (Nomore...HKEY/LOCALMACHINE/wtfdoesallthismean nonsense)

Just get a dell, and limit your money to under £300. You don't need a GPU/PPU to power those high-quality programs such as iTunes(Actually, my computer struggles to run it...) or Microsoft Word.
Get a Sony/Apple/Panasonic/Pioneer monitor, I spent a good £1k on mine, and it is definetly worth it, brand name monitors are high quality, and are well-built. You won't be dissapointed.
Creative Labs Speakers/Headphones, for sound quality, nothing beats Creative, 7.1 Surround Sound is very impressive.
Sound Blaster Great sound cards for your computer, great if you are planning on buying a 5.1/7.1 surround sound setup. Most sound card drivers include the Creative Console which allows you to duplicate a stereo signal to 5.1/7.1 channels, giving you surround sound, fake, but glorius all the same.
ANY keyboard, ANY mouse(Although preferably optical...), you do NOT need a fancy LCD display keyboard with USB slots to type blogs. Stay away from those gimmicks.
Get any hard drive, try to go middle-range, 100GB, my Samsung Hard Drives are fairly cheap and have NEVER caused problems in the 5 years I've had them.
1GB RAM, anywhere, I don't care.
Logitech (THE Webcam company, you cannot go wrong with a choice of webcam from them)
Gaming: Operating System[/u]
Windows XP SP2 - Best compatibility, low CPU/RAM usage. This is currently the gamers bible.
Windows Vista - Business/Home Basic - Do NOT say that it is pointless, we will all one day move to Vista, XP will become obsolete, you cannot support it forever. CURRENTLY XP is far better, but unfortunatly it will not stay that way, if games worked like that, why aren't we seeing Crysis on Windows 3.1? Or Bioshock? Direct X 10 isin't amazing, but its better, it will get better, live with it.
Linux won't cut it, don't go for Linux. Game compatibility is very poor, and emulation via WiNE or Cedega drives the performance and playability of the game to a complete halt. Don't get me wrong, I love Linux. I have Linux on tripleboot with Vista and XP, but Linux is not a great gaming operating system.
A Mac won't cut it either, even with the new Intel Chips, high end-PC's are about 5x better than the most powerful Mac Computers. Some games DO have Mac ports, yes, but not so many.
Gaming: Software[/u]
Steam (Don't complain, it is great for me, I live in an island obsolete to the world, new games may take weeks to arrive, and have premium added(More pricey than before), so Steam is a hero for me.
Xfire (Great app for gaming IM, in-game chatting/voice chatting for a variety of different games)
Ventrilo - Teamspeak (May be the difference between life and death for pro gamers, great for tactical gameplay that involves team co-ordination.)
DAEMON Tools (Great free CD/DVD virtual drive, mounts most images)
Hamachi (Virtual VPN, great for games that do not allow WAN gameplay, but LAN)
PCSX2 (THE Playstation 2 emulator, I have followed this since 0.8.0, and I love using it)
ePSXe (THE Playstation emulator, has never let me down.[/url]
Gaming: Hardware[/u]
NVIDIA all the way.
4GB RAM/8GB RAM

Fatal!ty Headphones/Mic, It is signed by a king, it must be godly.
Any Hard drive.
Some people love their keyboards and mouses, I personally don't care, and use plain boring ones, but definetly be looking to get a 5 button mouse, you will never wanna go back again.
Ageia PhysX PPU Card - Currently more of a gimmick, but will become more useful, I'm personally looking more forward to Euphoria Physics.
Hobnobs. These biscuits can power your fingers to play guitar hero by only plucking one way. Low power usage. Cheap. May need cleaned after use.
Nintendo Wii Remote & Bluetooth adaptor - Seriously, just toy around with this thing, this may make games a LOT easier to play.
Gaming: Minimum Specs to be pr0[/u]
