Heartbreaking. U get my props, alex. I cant even stick to a lame Worldcraft Map for more than three days. Finally releasing the mod makes it all worthwhile. Congratulations, man.

You've gotta be kidding me You mean to say I spent ALL that money on UT2k4 when I could have just single handedly created my own engine based on a single source code file? wow, what a dumbass i am

Well not create your own engine, but game. It doesn't come with c++ source or headers. It's like UT2004 minus all the content. The unrealscript isn't concentrated in a single file either, but just in all the parts of the engine: core, engine, ipdrv, uweb, GUI, fire. And some sample script, a level, textures and the odd static mesh. It's specifically meant to give starting game (or mod) developers something to work with without investing, the EULA forbids releasing a game based on it. But you can of course just toss it in ut2003 or ut2004 or most other games based on the engine when you're nearly finished. Guess what i'll be doing.

I had never heard of people doingthis before....
It strikes me as a path which would requite a ton of work.
Killing Floor, as (different) from UT2k4 as it may seem, still requires a WHOLE lot of the built in UT2k4 source code, and even art to function at all.
I wish you luck, if you plan on trying this path you've described, I doubt it will be easy.

Thanks. Yeah, i was aware of KF hooking into UT2K4 code extensively, its a mod after all, not a total conversion (despite looking like one). Using the runtime would've required a skilled coder, and would indeed be more work.

Actually, it is still a total conversion (an project where the art, thematics, and gameplay of the original game are entirely replaced with something different tends to qualify.

I think subclassing ut2004 gametypes and weapons and whatnot makes it a mod, albeit one with all its other content wholly authentic. A true TC would have script of it's own and only use the engine of it's parent game. I'm a very anal, fussy, pedantic and generally unpleasant person though, as Carth will no doubt confirm.

Killing Floor has script on its own. How the hell would you make a mod without it?

Erm, that'd be a full game! Like Splinter Cell, or XIII or any other number of Unreal Engine based games out there - a TC cannot use all it's own code because the authors don't have access to the full source, therefore cannot change it all.

sure it can, unrealscript is all you need.

Look @ every TC out there. they all extend from UT2004 gametypes in one way or another. so under your eyes. all TC's for all games. are simple mods. a mod, or modification is a small plugin that changes gameplay, for example, gravity, so you are comapring KF to a change in gravity? or some mre spammy weapons.. Killing floor is a TC. it has it's own .exe, alot of custom stuff. the only thing linking it to UT is the frame.

"the only thing linking it to UT is the frame." Not true, the multiplayer is a modded (codewise) INV with different art/models/monsters .

Each week it moves further from the UT frame.
Regardless, it's still a TC.
Case closed.
