Are you? Then this Half-Life 1 mod isn't for you! afraidofmonsters.moddb.com/Sorry, if you all know this one or if it has been posted already, but I stumbled over this (to me) relatively unknown mod today, while surfing around. I'd really like to share the link, because this little masterpiece might be easily overlooked. I just played through it and holy mother *takes a deep breath and rubs sweat away*....this mod is by far amongst the scariest ones I have ever played...ever! No kidding! The graphics aren't the most up to date ones, but trust me, it won't fail the effect at all. The first time I was freaked out and let loose this short, but noisy scream, my roomate ran up the stairs, with a concerned look in his face, asking me what's wrong. Oh my god, I think I almost got a heart attack lol. I was glued to the screen till the last second and finally the cramps in my fingers go away, that I'm able to type these lines. If you don't know this mod, you definately should give it a shot, even if you have to dig out your dusty Half-Life CD. It's well worth playing! Doom 3 wasn't able to scare me that much and I even dare to say, that it can be set almost equal to F.E.A.R ocassionally. I'm not easily freaked out by computer games, but I wasn't prepared for this one. Very nice level design and the sounds add to the creepy atmosphere. I won't spoil anything of the story, try it out yourself and I'm sure you won't regret it.

Be sure to change your diapers frequently ;D.
Hehe no, just let me know how you felt playing it. If you once played "They hunger" I can tell you, that AoM is much (!) scarier.

Does it feature ghosts on some level?
If so, it'd probably scare me. If not, unlikely considering I have only been scared by two video games since I was five.

There are some ghosts inside as well.Hmm I don't know, whether you would be scared ort not, but considering the fact, that you are running around in this game in pitch black only with your flashlight, while having something instantly appear in front of you, should make the most people jump in their seats. It's also a little how you approach such games. If you start in a "Oh, well. This should be scary, but I don't want to be scared. *yawn*" mood, it won't have as much effect on you as it would have else. You should let the atmosphere come over you and keep in mind, that it'll be all frightening and you actually want to be scared. Play like you was the player character of the game you play and the feeling will be so much more intense. I can't imagine you won't freak out occasionally, playing this one. You should try it What were those two games, that scared you?

F.E.A.R.(My legs literally went numb when I played the demo it freaked me out so much) and Resident Evil 1 when I was five.
I don't play video games to be scared, I play them to kick ass and take names.
But survival horror games are always fun, I'm just not usually scared.
Sure I'll jump, I mean..who hasn't? But I've never been fully immersed in an atmosphere, I don't really let it get to me, honestly.

I'm not too proud to admit I had to turn the first Silent Hill off a couple of times just to let myself calm down... that honestly terrified me... I was also playing in the dark with an open door behind me (which seems to make it all the more freaky) so that helped... I want to play FEAR so bad... Condemned: Criminal Origins' demo was kind of unsettling... awesome melee system, with sound effects that make you feel sick sometimes... (beating a drug crazed hobo to death with a locker door comes to mind...) sounds screwed up, but man, you feel like you are really fighting for your life in that game.

Don't be ashamed of that. I bet everyone reacted similar at laast once The most frightening thing for me in video games is water. Sounds stupid? Might be true, but there is nothing worse for me, than murky, dark water with horrible creatures inside. You can throw 7 legged, 10 feet high mutants at me without a problem, but let me jump in a murky pool and make something go "Grraaaarrgh *gurgle* *gurgle*" and watch me flip out When I met that alien shark in Half-Life the first time, I was so frightened. The sound it made, when it was speeding towards me and how it looked was so awful. I immediately hit quickload or ESC, if I fell into the water somehow, only not to see how it gets me lol. You've ever played Gothic 2? If you swam too far in the open water, a video sequence started, in which you was eaten by huge sea monsters. The moment I realized what was going on, saw the shape of the monster and heard the sound it made *Bam* I turned off my screen. Later on, I watched the sequence again, but with my hand over my eyes, peeking through. I always get this uneasy feeling, when it comes to water in video games, I can't tell you why. Even if there isn't any danger in the water, I'm getting goose bumps and try not to look below the surface. If there ever will be a game, completely themed around the water and the creatures inside, it would make me freak out more than all the Silent Hills of the world. I know, I deserve the "pansy of the year" award. ;D

Lets see...I guess the only creature in a game that has ever scared me were zombies back when I was younger. Nowadays nothing really scares me...don't know why. I guess I get a bit of a thrill if I'm at a really high place in the game, but its more excitement than fear. In the past year or so I've played through doom 3, fear, afraid of monsters, silent hill 1 and 2, RE 2, and they hunger; none of them scared me in the slightest bit(granted I'd played a couple of them previously). I'm hoping system shock 2 and eternal darkness will scare me, but I'm not holding all that much hope. The last game I can remember actually feeling fear while playing was half life 2 in ravenholm, or maybe RE4's castle.

Eternal Darkness is honestly just stupid, from what I played of it...don't count on getting scared.
And whatever you do, DON'T get a can of raid.

Don't get a can of raid... that's awesome... I really enjoyed Eternal Darkness, but it was never really scary... just kinda weird. Some of the insanity effects made me jump, more with surprise ("Um. My head just exploded.") then anything.
And Soul, that's really interesting, there was a kid on the Gamefaqs boards for Shadow of the Colossus who couldn't deal with water. Nothing to be ashamed of, we all have our fears (spiders being mine). Water freaks me out too sometimes... I live in Hawaii, and have recently begun surfing... and if you float out there on your board long enough, and just try to imagine what's underneath you, or how much water is out there, you can freak yourself out... especially when a terrifying sea monster leaps out of the water in front of you... which happened to me... granted, it was a sea turtle... lol

Last year I was on a vacation in egypt and was addicted to snorkeling on the coral reef in front of the hotel (most beautiful thing I've seen in my life). As long as I can see the ground everything is fine, but when I swam a bit away from the beach for some reason, I looked below me with my scuba goggles, freaked out and swam panically back to the beach. I know, that there is no real danger below me, except the worst enemy: My imagination. Seems like the "Jaws" and shit left their scars in my mind. Did you ever watch "Open Water"? Hell, this one is evil and if I'd be in their situation, I'd go nuts and pass out for sure. It was even a pain for me, just to watch this movie. BTW I envy you for living on Hawaii

Was open water the one with the couple stuck in the middle of the ocean? I'm amazed that was a full length movie...I can't think up more than 15 minutes worth of plot after they hit the water. Also, pie.

Also, pie. I've heard several times now, that the real starring of Open Water is the ocean and its inhabitants instead of the human actors, which is true imho. The movie wants to play with the imagination of the audience in the first line, projecting these pictures into their minds and stirs in their fear about being in the same situation like the couple. The "plot" serves only as a secondary aspect and placeholder.

Gotta tell you Soul, Hawaii is nice, but the cost of living and the fact that an hour drive (least on Oahu) will get you anywhere makes it a pretty limited place... but yeah, the beaches are amazing, and you can go all year round... that makes it worth it... but I'm like you, one of my favorite places to hang out is Ala Moana beach. Usually, it's not great for snorkling, but I do anyway.. near the beach it's great, you're only a few feet above the sand, but a bit further out it just drops away... freaks me the hell out. Actually was there one day snorkling when the sun came out and cleared the water... and I was floating next to a barracuda.
You'd love Hanauma Bay though, or Shark's Cove (ignore the name), both you can see 20-30 feet down to the sea bottom, and it's just unbelievable. Hanauma in particular is almost always crystal clear. I went night snorkling once, which after I got over my fear of being in the water at night (and almost being attacked by a moray... which was mostly my fault) it was really quite an experience.
Pointless fact, the Hawaiian state fish is called the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. Almost as fun to pronounce. It's damn goofy looking too.
